3PEAK – Bidirectional current sense amplifier TPA191 (CSA): A large product group at 3PEAK are analog ICs.
We have already presented various standard amplifier types, such as Low-Power Amps, Low-Noise Amps, Zero-Drift OpAmps or Amplifiers with a large bandwidth .
In this case, we focus on the TPA191 for bidirectional current measurement.
The bidirectional current measuring amplifiers of the TPA191 series with very low drift can measure voltage drops via shunts at common-mode voltages from -0.3 V to 36 V, independently from the supply voltage. Seven fixed gain values from 20 V/V to 1000 V/V are planned for this task. 50 V/V, 100 V/V and 200 V/V are already available.
The low offset of the zero-drift architecture enables current detection 
with low voltage drop of only 10 mV full-scale across a shunt resistor.
The TPA191 derivatives require an operating voltage of between 2.7 V and 36 V and have an operating current consumption of 80 µA (typical).
The amplifiers are specified for operation in a temperature range from -40 °C to 125 °C and are offered in a space-saving SOT-363 housing.
The TPA191 derivatives are designed for both high-side and low-side measurements in systems up to 36 V. This is possible since the common-mode voltage is independent of the operating voltage (VS) due to its topology and can be selected either higher or lower than this.
The TPA191 operates either uni- or bi-directional by connecting the REF pin to IC ground or setting it typically to VS/2.
