Nuvoton – NAU88L21CYG Audio Codec – Ultra-Low Power & High-Performance

Nuvoton – NAU88L21CYG Audio Codec

Nuvoton, founded in Taiwan in 2008, has a long history in the audio domain in addition to their own microcontrollers. The product portfolio covers almost every stage of the audio signal chain, from recording to processing all the way to output.

Not only that – Nuvoton offers solutions for a wide range of applications from toys and low-cost solutions to complex high-performance products that support audio enhancements (psycho-acoustic effects, noise cancellation, beam-forming, etc.).

Nuvoton – NAU88L21CYG Audio Codec for advanced mobile applications

The NAU88L21CYG is a high-performance audio codec with extremely low power consumption that integrates both analog and digital audio functions and a stereo Class-G headphone amplifier.

Datasheet NAU88L21C

The codec offers two differential analog microphone inputs. These can be used for two mono signals or one stereo configuration (each differential). The bias voltage provided by the IC is very low noise with typ. 7µVrms (max. 10µVrms) between 20Hz and 20kHz.

Alternatively, the NAU88L21C offers the option of using a digital microphone instead of analog microphones.

The selection can be configured via hardware registers. This ensures flexible selection and a high-quality input signal.

The signal path of the NAU88L21CYG

The ADC function block offers 24-bit resolution and features programmable bi-quad filters and a 2-point compressor. The volume can be adjusted in a two-stage block between -103dB and +24dB.

The sampling rate of the codec can be selected between 8kHz and 192kHz. The digital I2S/PCM I/O port can be used to play digital audio in a wide variety of formats.

The NAU88L21C implements a channel-based digital mixer architecture. Each DAC output (L&R) can be mixed from both DAC inputs (e.g. I2S signals).

The ADC input channels can be additionally mixed to each output of the DAC – ideal e.g. for headset applications to play back the microphone signals directly without high latency.

The digital part of the DAC function block uses 24-bit signal processing to process a 16-bit digital sample stream. It also features programmable bi-quad filters, volume control including soft mute and a compressor.

The NAU88L21C provides a pair of ground referenced Class G headphone outputs fed by the two DACs. The Class G headphone amplifier is supplied via the CPOUTP and CPOUTN charge pump output voltages and offers a gain range of -9dB to 0dB. The headphone output can also be used as a line-out.
