Nuvoton – M2L31 – High Performance & Low Power M23

Nuvoton – M2L31 – High Performance & Low Power: Since the company was founded in 2008 (as a spin-off from Winbond Electronics), Nuvoton has concentrated on the development of microcontrollers.

With the NuMicro M2L31 series, Nuvoton combines excellent efficiency with innovations for high performance.

M2L31 Serie – Cortex-M23 Family

With the M2L31 series, Nuvoton now offers a power-efficient Cortex-M23 based platform for modern designs where both power consumption and performance are key.

Special feature: In addition to SRAM, the M2L31 series does not use standard FLASH technology as non-volatile memory, but ReRAM. ReRAM/SRAM combinations from 64/40 kBytes to 512/168 kBytes are available.

The M2L31 can be clocked at up to 72MHz. The series offers packages from 25 to 128 pins from LQFP via QFN to WLCSP (2.5×2.5mm²) if space on the PCB is limited.

ReRAM – At a glance

With ReRAM – Resistive Random-Access Memory – the digital information is stored in the form of different resistances of the individual memory elements. This has practical advantages compared to conventional FLASH memory:

Superior Reliability

granular access optimizes cells usage for longer lifetime

Low Power Consumption

Overwrite cells directly

Faster read/write cycles

Save time of page erase

The main difference to standard FLASH memories is the fact that ReRAM does not require a page to be erased before writing. This saves essential time and energy. A ReRAM is also organized in words of 4 bytes each, which can lead to a longer service life overall, similar to EEPROMs.

Power Modi – 13 Möglichkeiten zur Optimierung

With the M2L31 series, you can optimize the power requirements of your application with a total of 13 different power modes.

In normal run mode, the derivatives of the M2L31 series require 60µA/MHz. All peripherals are supplied with power here. In idle mode, all clocks are still available, the CPU is set to sleep mode for fast reactivation (max. 11 clocks). Now 33µA/MHz are still required.

With this 11 power-down modes

Normal-Power-Down 0 – 5 (NPDx)

Deactivate clock sources & power for memory & peripherals

Standby-Power-Down 0 – 2 (SPDx)

CPU off, int. LDO on, LPSRAM in SPD0-4, RTC available & LIRC Wake-Up

Deep-Power-Down 0 & 1 (DPDx)

CPU off, RAM off, LDO floating, RTC is available & LIRC for Wake-Up

you have many possibilities to deactivate clock sources step by step and to interrupt the power supply for memory and peripherals. Worth mentioning is the separate low-power domain of the MCUs, which are still available down to the normal power down 3 and 4. This offers LP-Timer, LP-UART, LP-I2C, LP-SPI, LP-PDMA and an LP-ADC, some of which can communicate with each other directly or via the LP-PDMA without a CPU.

A detailed description of the modes can be found in chapter 6.2.4 of the TRM (Technical Reference Manual). Corresponding typical and maximum power consumption in chapter 8.3 of the data sheet.

Analog, Connectivity & Security

To meet the requirements of modern applications, Nuvoton has integrated interesting peripherals in the development & definition of the M2L31 NuMicro MCU family.

The 12-bit SAR ADC offers 24 channels and sampling rates of up to 3.42Msps. The DAC also has 12-bit resolution at 1Msps. In addition, the M2L31 MCUs integrate up to 3 operational amplifiers that can be used as PGA or OpAmp.

USB is used in many applications. USB2.0 full-speed OTG host and device are supported. A controller for USB Type-C Rev. 2.1 and USB-PD 3.0 is also available. In addition to USB, interfaces such as CAN-FD, USCI, QSPI, UART, SPI/I2S and I2C are also integrated.

Hardware CRC and a TRNG (NIST SP800-22A) are available for additional security. The TRNG serves as a seed for the PRNG contained in the crypto accelerator. The up to 256-bit long random numbers of the PRNG can then be used in the AES unit for transport encryption. 3 tamper pins can be used to delete special memory areas intended for keys. Two 256-bit OTP areas can be used for the public ECC keys for secure boot.

Nuvoton – M2L31 – High Performance & Low Power: Optimize the power requirements of your application with this NuMicro microcontroller family with no compromise on high-performance peripherals.
