Single-pair Ethernet connectors 229A/B: With the new 229A/B connector family, the Taiwanese manufacturer ATTEND offers the basis for future SPE applications.
These connectors support data rates from 10 Mbit to 1 Gbit and comply to the standards
This covers a wide range of applications that can already be found in areas such as industrial automation, building automation, sensor and actuator networks, robotics applications and transportation, or will become more common in the future.
Single-pair Ethernet, or SPE for short, is a candidate to replace the physical layer of current fieldbus systems or to be considered in the optimisation of cabling costs across a wide range of applications.
Both sub-families 229A and 229B have been developed for industrial use in the temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. The connectors fulfil the IEEE 802.3 T1 standards and comply with the IEC63171 specifications.
Apart from the different connector shapes, they differ in their respective IP protection class and in the options they offer for transmitting power in parallel with the data.
Although the 229A series is not waterproof with a protection class of IP20, it offers protection against contact with foreign objects with a diameter of more than 12 mm, such as fingers. These connectors have 2 contacts for transmitting data and power to connected devices. They are mounted parallel to the printed circuit board (R/A) using THT. The other features can be summarised as follows:
With 4 contacts, the 229B series offers two additional contacts for power supply in addition to the data pair. Similar to the 229A series, the data pair is designed to support up to 4A, while the additional power supply pair supports 8A. The advantage is that industrial devices requiring significantly more than 50W can also be powered safely via these connectors.
In addition, the 229B series offers protection class IP67 for use in damp environments thanks to variants with screwed connection of the counterpiece.
The 229B series offers a total of 7 derivatives, each with a different connection / mounting option. In addition to the R/A orientation (-R00x), vertically orientated versions (-S00x) are also available.
The features of this series in a nutshell:
With the 229A series, ATTEND offers the right solution for applications requiring IP20 protection combined with a power supply of up to approx. 50W. The 229B series addresses more challenging applications with higher protection class and power supply requirements. With these solutions made by ATTEND, current and future single-pair Ethernet (SPE) connections can be reliably realised.
