Nuvoton – MA35 MPU Family Update

Nuvoton – MA35 MPU Family Update

Nuvoton – MA35 MPU Family Update: Nuvoton’s latest MPU series with dual-core Cortex-A35 has a long tradition. Nuvoton has been offering ARM9 based MPU solutions for many years. SiP with integrated DDR RAM were already available in the earlier generations, just like today in the MA35 MPU family.

This shows the connection to Winbond. Nuvoton once started as a spin-off from Winbond’s microcontroller division and both are now part of the Walsin Group.

MA35 Sub-Families Comparison

Nuvoton successfully launched the MA35D1 family onto the market around two and a half years ago. An MPU family for advanced IIoT applications. 800MHz main clock, very versatile peripherals with 2 integrated 1Gbit Ethernet MACs for gateway applications. We have already presented this family to you in detail.

MA35H0 – HMI Series

The MA35H0 HMI series is designed for industrial display solutions. With the integrated JPEG & H.264 decoder and 2D graphics accelerator, displays with a resolution of up to 1280×800 pixels can be operated at 60Hz.

The dual-core Cortex-A35 runs at 650MHz. The available SiP MA35H04F764C integrates 128Mbyte DDR SDRAM and can be used from -40°C to +125°C.

Thanks to the LQFP216 housing, the number of layers on the board can be minimized and a low-cost production technology can be selected.

For a fast interconnection within the application, this SiP offers a 10/100M Ethernet MAC with IEEE 1588v2 support, USB 2.0 high-speed host and device, SDIO 3.0, QSPI, 2x CAN FD, 6x UART, I2S. SPI and I2C are also on board as well as a 12-bit ADC @500ksps with 8 channels. This supports 4/5-wire resistive touchscreens.

Ideal for industrial display devices with 720p, which implement smooth animations and video playback.

MA35D0 – Industrial Edge Device Series

Compared to the MA35H0, the MA35D0 sub-family does not have an integrated H.264 decoder. However, the JPEG decoder and a 2D graphics engine also enable modern displays with resolutions of up to 1280×800 pixels at 60Hz.

In addition to the SiP with 128MB integrated SDRAM, a variant with 256MB is also available.

The close relationship can be seen in the other peripherals. However, the MA35D0 sub-family offers two 10/100M Ethernet MACs for gateway applications, as well as additional UARTs (11x) and one CAN FD interface more (3x).

MA35 MPU Family Update – Summary

As shown above, each of the MA35 MPU sub-families is designed slightly different to allow you to choose the appropriate performance and interfaces. We have only touched on a few details in this brief overview. The following table compares the three sub-families in more detail

Nuvoton offers various evaluation platforms for these processors. Linux support is a matter of course. Changes and patches can be found on kernel.org here.

We would also like to remind you that Nuvoton has a long history in HMI applications and offers direct Segger emWin, QT and LVGL support for its own processors. You can find a current overview here on the manufacturer’s homepage.
