Holtek just announced the release of its new synchronous step-down DC/DC converter, the HT74173. The device can operate with an input voltage range of 2.5V up to 6V and is thus suitable for use in products powered by 3 to 4 cell dry batteries or a single Li-battery.
The HT74173 provides an extremely stable power supply for portable products in which high currents can occur – such as motors in toys and massage devices or laser diodes in levelling lasers. With an output current of up to 3A, this part supplies these applications with a stable output voltage despite high current loads. With a current consumption of only 50μA in no-load operation and a switch-off current of just 100nA, this converter extends the service life of your application’s battery.
The automatic PWM/PFM mode switching is useful to drive up to 3A load current and also decrease its standby current in no load condition. The Hysteretic PFM mode extends the battery life by reducing the quiescent current during the system standby. In the shutdown mode, the device turns off and consumes only 0.1μA input current typically.
In order to extend the end product runtime, the HT74173 has a 100% duty cycle operation feature. If the battery voltage should become lower than the target output voltage, the output voltage will then follow the input voltage. In this state, the power-good signal is pulled low and can therefore be used to indicate a necessary battery change.
TThe HT74173 achieves an efficiency of > 90% in the range of about 30 to 600mA output current at 3.3V output voltage under all VIN conditions. If VIN is only about 4.2V or below this high efficiency is valid from 3mA up to the maximum load of 3A.
The 8-pin SOP-EP package comes with an exposed pad for optimized heat dissipation. If a shorted load condition occurs, the surface temperature will increase by one degree only. This provides additional safety in battery driven applications. This package also offers a Power-Good signal pin.
The 5-pin SOT23 and 5-pin SOT89 packages are suitable for use in small portable products with space restrictions.
